HINDENBURG 1937 crash cover, partially charred letter sent from Schiedam (the Netherlands) by Mrs H. Mak-v.d. Wetering on 1-5-1937 to Mr P. Mak in Hillside Avenue Nutley (NJ). The ill-fated zeppelin crashed while attempting to land and was subsequently engulfed in flames at Lakehurst NJ on the 6th of May 1937. This envelope has been saved and carefully sealed by the Post Office Department (officially sealed Post Office Department UNITED STATES OF AMERICA). The cover has been franked with a 12½c Jamboree and a pair of 30c Wilhelmina Veth type stamps, all tied by a «short-beam» cds Schiedam postmark (1.V.1937). Rate for a letter to the USA up to 20 grams was 12½ cent, the additional zeppelin fee was 60c per 5 gram, so this is the correct 72½ cent rate for a letter up to 5 grams. The piece has been certificated by Vleeming AIEP in 2019: From the Netherlands 29 saved pieces of mail are known to me (20 addressed to Mr Thoolen and 9 private). Partly burned letter and franking genuine, transported by the Hindenburg. Date and franking clearly visible., cat.v. EUR17.500
